The Truth of Pop and Dangdut

            Music has been developing rapidly over the progress of the period. Music nowadays has many genres and each has particular characteristics. Music in Indonesia also has many genres. There are two most popular genre in Indonesia those are dangdut and pop. We must have been familiar with both. We can easily differentiate which dangdut and pop. It shows that both have many differences but we cannot deny that both also have a similarity.

            The first difference is the product of dangdut and pop. As we know that dangdut is the original music of Indonesia. It is the evolution of Malayan, India, and Arabian music. It is like an icon of Indonesia because it is always attributed to Indonesia. Otherwise, pop came from Napoli, Italy. Both have been developing rapidly in Indonesia.

Both are also different from the singer. The performance of dangdut singers are colorful, they used to wear colorful clothes and have a tacky performance. Otherwise, the pop singers always have a cool performance. They prefer accentuating the image because a Pop song which is the singer has a good-looking performance will be easier to be popular. The pop song can be song by a singer or group band consisting of about 4 until 6 personnels which all of personnels are also popular whereas dangdut is a kind of music which has a lead singer, male or female, backed by four to eight musicians.       

Both have some different styles. The instrument of dangdut is tabla, Gendang, Flute, mandolin, guitars, and synthesizers but table is the most dominant instrument in dangdut. Dangdut is always attributed to wobble whereas pop is attributed to melancholiest song. In this era, dangdut is influenced by Middle Eastern pop music, Western rock, house music, hip-hop music, contemporary R&B, and reggae which is well-known as modern dangdut. The tone of dangdut uses minor scale because it is the evolution of Arabian music whereas pop uses major scale and minor scale. It means that pop is more varied than dangdut. However, both have a similarity from the lyric. The lyric of both are about love, life, and religiousness.

Base on above means that dangdut and pop have many differences and just have a similarity from the lyric. Therefore, we can easy to differentiate both. However, both are kind of popular music in Indonesia and each fans have their own reason why do they choose dangdut or pop. We can conclude and decide which one will we love.
