Modern Market vs. Traditional Market

Indonesian people have many alternatives to buy stuff that people require for their life every day. They can go to modern market or traditional market for buying something. In recent years modern market are getting more popular in urban lifestyle. In some way, modern markets are similar to traditional markets, but people usually prefer go to modern market to traditional market because both of them have many differences.

Modern market or mall and traditional market are belonging to Shopping Centre. Both of them sell many things or goods such as clothes, electronics, and many others. People can choose whether they want to go shopping in mall or traditional market. A modern market is literally constructed in fix location that may include many facilities such as multi-storey car park, cinema or restaurant. Similarly, traditional markets are set up in specific locations but usually at a very smaller size comparing to mall.

Modern market and traditional market also have differences. Traditional markets are situated in nearly every sector of the city and nearly everything is available in every sector’s market whereas shopping malls are situated out of residential areas mainly in Industrial Area. When it comes to the atmosphere, traditional markets in no way are comparable to malls. In traditional market, people can be bored and annoyed because of feeling hot.  In a mall people spend many hours without being bored; if they want a particular product, there they can find many choices to buy. If they get tired of shopping, either they can take a rest in a nice coffee shop or even they can go to the game club at the same building. Shopkeepers in traditional markets usually know people personally, there is some amount of goodwill between them, and they usually offer discounts and even let take goods on credit basis where people can pay them later in case of emergencies. On the other hand, there is minimum or no amount of goodwill in stores at malls. They usually have employees who handle stores and do not have the authority to do anything on their own.

            Even though modern market and traditional market have differences, that cannot make people confused to choose go shopping in modern market or traditional market. People must have consider where the best for them. Modern market and traditional market are only places for people to buy or selling something. People should go to modern market or traditional market it depends on individual’s choice.
